The Physical Education and Recreation Graduate Student Society (PERGSS) is a graduate student organization designed to provide academic, social, and athletic opportunities for the graduate students in Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation at the University of Alberta. PERGSS strives to promote, provide, and organize professional and academic support for its members. In addition, the organization acts as a mediator between the Faculty and graduate students.

Learning and writing workshops

There are a number of learning and writing workshops available to grad students this semester. Put on by student services these workshops aim to help grad students write at the highest level and overcome some of the academic pitfalls we might encounter.

Below is a list of the workshops available, registration is on a first come, first served basis. If you are interested in applying but might need some financial assistance, GSA have funding available for a limited number of places.

LEARNING WORKSHOPS

-          Time Management and Procrastination ($25) (Jan. 20, 10-11:20 a.m. OR Mar. 8, 10-11:20 a.m.)
-          Creating Effective Conference Posters ($25) (Feb. 1, 10-11:20 a.m. OR Mar. 23, 10-11:20 a.m.)
-          Presenting Data Clearly and Concisely ($25) (Jan. 26, 10-11:20 a.m.)
-          Reading Research Papers ($25) (Feb. 9, 1-2:20 p.m. OR Mar. 17, 10-11:20 a.m.)
-          Brain Burps and Avoiding Intellectual Burnout ($25) (Mar. 2, 1-2:20 p.m. OR Mar. 29, 10-11:20)

WRITING WORKSHOPS

-          Creating A Compelling Thesis ($100, six sessions) (Jan. 26-Mar. 9, 6-8:30 p.m. OR Feb. 8-Mar.  22, 1-3:30 p.m., excluding Reading Week)
-          Crafting a Thesis or Dissertation Proposal ($40) (Feb. 3, 9 a.m.-noon OR Apr. 5, 1-4 p.m.)
-          Writing a Literature Review ($40) (Jan. 18, 1-4 p.m. OR Apr. 2, 9 a.m.-noon)
-          Writing an Effective Funding Proposal ($40) (Jan. 22, 9 a.m.-noon OR Apr. 13, 9 a.m.-noon)
-          Writing a Scholarly Abstract ($25) (Mar. 19, 10 a.m.-noon)
-          Scholarly Writing at the Graduate Level ($100, online, six weeks) (Jan 31.-Mar. 25)
